Luxating Patellas

A luxating patella is a birth defect that affects many small breeds. The condition involves abnormal movement of the patella or kneecap over the thighbone or femur. This abnormal movement, usually from side to side instead of up and down, can cause arthritis, and noticeable limping will be the first visible sign that there is a problem. Corrective surgery for this condition has a high success rate.

Have your vet check yearly for luxating patellas. This can also be submitted to the OFA and should be. Unlike hips, clear patellas at a particular age do not mean the dog is free of the condition for life. It can appear later. There again, if surgery is advised, better it be done while the dog is a young, health candidate for surgery.
